A Beginners Guide To Starting Your Own Super Profitable Internet Business - part 1 by Brian Cotsen

You know if I’d known just how much there was to learn, and how much information there was to wade through out there before I dipped my toe in the water… I doubt whether I’d have considered diving in at all.

So thank goodness I didn't know till it was too late!

There’s just soooo much to take on board.

But like many people out there I just jumped right in and then realised what a mountain there was to climb.

Do you feel that way too?

How many questions have you asked yourself about your lack of knowledge and how you are ever going to get to grips with it all.

Hey I'm not supposed to be scaring you off am I…

like Julie Andrews says, in the sound of music… lets make this a little easier...

Here are a few simple questions to ask yourself to get you focused on what business can work for you:

  • Question 1 – What is your current knowledge and what skills do you have to use in the online business?
  • Question 2 – What skills do you have that you can utilise specifically with an internet business?
  • Question 3 – Are you looking to start a hobby business that may turn into a full time business somewhere down the line? Or are you making the leap and planning on setting up full time from day one?

Lets look a little more at each of these

Question 1 – What is your current knowledge of and skills with using computers and computer technology?
  • Do you know word?
  • Ever used a spreadsheet? No it’s not a form of bedding!
  • Do emails frighten you or are you able to navigate your way around ‘Outlook’ and fiddle with POP3 settings etc
  • How about HTML, CSS, Java Script?
  • Ever used photoshop?
  • Can you type?

These are all skills that you may well have developed in your current or previous job but they are all essential skills needed by anyone who is serious about succeeding with an internet website business.

Having a good working knowledge will certainly stand you in good stead when it comes to progressing the business forward.

But if you feel you need to get to grips with any of these skills there are great evening and weekend courses run all over the world that aim to help those who want to get on line and get going.

Don’t forget that you will find loads of free ebooks, articles, ecourse on line… just google what you are looking for.

If you found that you were answering ‘NO’ to most of the above skills don’t worry… you’ll pick them up but it may sway your decision as to whether you are ready to go for it ‘full time’ or take it a little slower.

Question 2 – Have you thought about your most important tool?

Your Website!

No online business can truly be successful without its' own website.

Do you have any knowledge at all in this area?

If you don’t I recommend that you think about educating yourself and learning how you could go about creating a simple website for you to run your business from.

Before you say that you will get a web designer to build one for you let me throw in some things for you to consider:

  • You will need to be able to understand at least a little HTML (that’s the code that all websites are built in and that the internet relies on to work).
  • You will be making amendments to areas of your website at least once a day and very often several times a day.
  • You will learn that web designers do not always know how to ensure that your website is fully ‘optimised’ so that you appear in the search engine results. Most web designers worry more about the look than the function/ optimisation of a website.
  • Creating a good looking website is no longer as difficult or as costly as it once was… in fact all the successful people I know of online built and maintain their own sites… and many knew nothing about computers let alone websites and internet marketing.

Question 3 – Are you looking to start a hobby business or a full time job?

Let me be more specific. Do you hope to earn some extra income on line to add to your current income. I call these hobby businesses because they can be lucrative and pull in money but they are often those types of businesses that fit in around other responsibilities.

Full time jobs are really just that. You may still be working from home, still be using your home computer but you start at 9 and finish at 5, though many focused internet marketers start a lot earlier than that and can be still staring at the screen at midnight… It can be very compulsive to begin with.

Lets look at some examples of ‘Hobby Businesses’:

  • Running an online auction business like ebay… so maybe you scour junk shops and sell collectable or clothes on line. But there is a lot more to ebaying than just these… see my articles on ebay and running an online auction business. This sort of business be one that crosses over from being a hobby business to full time… see later notes.
  • Adsense and being paid for hosting some banners or ads on your website, blog or newsletter -  Often people with family websites or who run a simple community or group website can make a nice little income from hosting Adsense and the like… it takes virtually no effort and it runs itself. See my article on a beginners guide to Adsense and other Pay Per Click Advertising Revenue.
  • Writing articles for money – You’ll soon hear or read the words, if you haven’t already, ‘Content is King’, and I thought that was Elvis! Well Content or website copy is king and everyone who runs a successful website, needs it. So if you like writing and have a favourite subject or you like researching and writing about things you’re asked to find out about… this is a great little money earner. There are several websites that pay you to be their ‘Expert Writer’ like ‘about.com’. Read my beginners guide to writing on line to make a living.
  • Be a reviewer – A growing service is developing for online reviewers. You review anything from the usability of websites to the service given by companies on and off line.
